چکیده

The dynamics of a confined polymer melt between strong adsorbing surfaces is considered theoretically. In particular the influence of bridging on the rheological behavior is investigated. I t is shown that the bridges are very important for small enough shear velocities. Several regimes of qualitatively different rheological behavior depending on the shear velocity are predicted, one of the intermediate regimes being characterized by a power law decrease of the shear stress a8 a function of the velocity.

Linear Shear Response at Strongly Adsorbing Surfaces

The linear-response effective shear moduli of polymer melts confined between strongly adsorbing surfaces (parallel plates of mica) was studied as a function of the excitation frequency. Linear response (achieved with shear amplitudes of e 2 A) implies that measurements did not perturb the film structure. The measurements employed a surface forces apparatus modified for dynamic mechanical shear ...

Prediction of multiple overshoots in shear stress during fast flows of bidisperse polymer melts

We present a differential constitutive model of stress relaxation in polydisperse linear polymer melts and solutions that contains contributions from reptation, contour-length fluctuations, and chain stretching. The predictions of the model during fast start-up and steady shear flows of polymer melts are in accord with experimental observations. Moreover, in accordance with reported experimenta...

Nonlinear Rheology of Unentangled Polymer Melts Reinforced with High Concentration of Rigid Nanoparticles

A scaling model is presented to analyze the nonlinear rheology of unentangled polymer melts filled with high concentration of small spherical particles. Assuming the majority of chains to be reversibly adsorbed to the surface of the particles, we show that the emergence of nonlinearity in the viscoelastic response of the composite system subjected to a 2D shear flow results from stretching of t...

Rheology of Ceramic-powder-filled Polymer Melts

Ceramic powder (zirconia) was mixed with binder consisting polypropylene, paraffin and stearic acid in elastic extruder. Steady and oscillatory shear flow properties of these materials in the molten state were measured on a cone-plate rheometer; parallel superposed steady and oscillatory shear flow experiments were also carried out. Moreover, flow properties at high shear rates were measured on...

Nanorheology of Confined Polymer Melts. 2. Nonlinear Shear Response at Strongly Adsorbing Surfaces

The large-amplitude nonlinear shear rheology of polymer melts confined between strongly adsorbing surfaces (parallel plates of mica) was studied as a function of strain, frequency, and thickness of the polymer films. The shear strains varied from less than 0.1 (linear response) to over 30 (at which the film structure was strongly modified by the imposed shear). The measurements employed a surfa...
